Five thousand, six hundred and sixty-one candidates out of the 9,966 persons who sat for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, failed the examination.
The Principal Assistant Registrar, Public Relations, Mr. Adegbenro Adebanjo, made this known in a statement on Monday.
According to him, the candidates scored less than 50 per cent in the exercise.
Nine thousand, nine hundred and sixty-six candidates sat for the examination to qualify for the 2,834 spaces in the university.
Adebanjo also noted that Okon Imaabasi and Isichei Kenneth emerged the best candidates, as each of them scored more than 90 per cent in the examination.
While Okon is to study Biochemistry, Isichei will study Mechanical Engineering.
On the conduct of the examination, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Tunde Arayela, explained that candidates were screened based on standard regulations provided by the National Universities Commission.
He added, “Only the best would be admitted, subject to NUC’s acceptance, as the university has a current carrying capacity to admit 2,834 persons into its existing 39 departments.”
Also, the Dean, Students Affairs Division, Dr. Kayode Alese, said the exercise was free of malpractice.
Alese said, “Candidates were screened, even in the examination hall, as passport size photographs of each candidate were displayed at the top right corner of computers in use as a means of verification to dissuade impersonation.”
