Jamb saga has not stop unfolding as candidates have been reacting to the cut off marks set by JAMB candidates. You may be interested in what this candidates think about the 2015 JAMB cut off mark.
JAMB’s cut-off score good
The 180 cut-off mark which the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board gave universities is fair enough. But many of my friends complained about the cut-off mark for UNILAG. Personally, I think it should be lowered. Two hundred and fifty is too high. If UNILAG lowers it to 200, I am quite sure I’ll gain admission. The same goes for other candidates.
— Seye Ogunrinde
180 too low
The increase of cut -off point by some universities is justified. For instance, there are too many applicants for the limited space available at UNILAG.
— Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, Dept. of English, UNILAG
Good directive
This is a good directive from JAMB because too many candidates want to get into the universities. But for UNILAG where 250 cut-off mark caused a protest, lowering the cut-off will increase student population and lead to overcrowded classrooms. Also, the cut-off mark will sieve out the serious candidates from unserious ones. This is not to forget that some studious candidates, who were unable to make 250, may be affected. At the end of the day, the university stands to gain a lot. Personally, I have applied to another university to study engineering. I do not want to be affected by the cut-off issue.

180 is reasonable
The one hundred and eighty score fixed by JAMB as the minimum entry requirement into Nigerian universities is reasonable enough. This, no doubt, will be different from what different universities are going to peg as their cut-off points for courses. The 180 will give many candidates the opportunity to compete with others especially for brilliant ones who did not do well in the JAMB examination.
The 180 cut-off mark by JAMB is not low because 40 on a scale of 100 is a pass mark in the university.
— Prof. Agu Gab Agu, ex-Dean, Faculty of Law, Enugu State University of Science and Technology
Above 200 high
I know that some candidates scored above 200 but consideration should also be given to those who scored below. It is good that the board has fixed 180 as the cut-off mark for universities. I chose UNILAG but I have not been able to register on the institution’s website. I think JAMB wanted to reduce the number of students who will gain entry into UNILAG which was why it fixed the cut-off mark at 250. I prefer polytechnics to UNILAG because the cut-off issue has further put pressure on the universities and candidates.

JAMB now irrelevant
Universities are at liberty to determine their cut-off marks. The 180 cut-off mark set by JAMB is low because the candidates seeking admission into Nigerian varsities are many. One hundred and eighty as cut-off is low on a scale of 400. Why should 180 be a pass mark? OAU only invited candidates who scored 200 and above for Post-UTME. The candidates, who scored 200 and above, are those who passed the JAMB examination. It is not a new thing that JAMB pegged the cut-off to 180 but it should allow universities to determine their entry marks. By allowing universities to conduct another examination for the candidates, it has shown that JAMB has become irrelevant. The body has defeated its essence over the years and no candidate should be placed in an institution that he or she did not choose either for first or second choice.
— Chijioke Uwasomba, Dept of English, OAU
180 is fair
I can only imagine what candidates who scored less than 200 are facing. I scored 245 and I have not been able to register on the website of the University of Nigeria which is the institution I chose. It has been a challenge for me. I believe those who scored over 200 and above should be eligible to write Post-UTME. Pegging the cut-off at 180 or 200 is just fair; 250 is too high.

180 can’t be cut-off point
One hundred and eighty has been the baseline for JAMB examination. It is different from cut-off mark for admission into universities because JAMB should not dictate the cut-off mark for universities. A decade ago, the baseline was 160. For UNILAG, it has never gone below 200.
Most first generation universities have never gone below 200. So it is wrong if we say cut-off mark is 180. JAMB is expecting that anyone who scores below 180 should not gain admission into a university. One hundred and eighty baseline is not a new thing.
— Prof. Olatunde Makanju, Dept of Psychology, UNILAG
180 not a merit score
I think 180 as cut-off mark for admission into a university in Nigeria is very low. The score will affect the reading culture of students in Nigeria. The JAMB examination is on a scale of 400 and 180 is not even half of 400. JAMB should not encourage such cut-off point because it is not good for the educational goal of a country like Nigeria.

180 not a pass mark
Two hundred has always been the cut-off mark, even at OAU. Two hundred is a good measure because the number of applicants trying to get into standard universities is very high. These universities are considered cheaper than private ones. In other state universities, 180 is the pass mark, this could be applied to private universities. But in our type of university, that mark is not so good; the quality of students also matters. The norm in most standing first generation varsities, and this has been operating over the years, is that 200 stands as the pass mark. It is not the cut-off mark. Anyone who scored 200, as far as these standard universities are concerned, is deemed to have passed JAMB. In Post-UTME, if the person scores above 200, he or she is said to have passed, then that candidate is considered for admission.
