The Rivers State House of Assembly has passed a bill renaming the Rivers State Polytechnic, located at Bori, the traditional headquarters of Ogoni ethnic nationality, after late environmentalist, Kenule Saro-Wiwa.
Rivers State governor, Barr Nyesom Wike, had last week announced the renaming of the Rivers State polytechnic after the late Saro-Wiwa, after which he sent an executive bill to amend section 1 sub 1 of the Rivers State Polytechnic Law, No 2, 1989 to reflect the change.
Debating on the bill after the House was converted to a committee of the whole yesterday, all the 25 lawmakers present supported the bill’s passage, saying late Saro-Wiwa championed the struggle of the Niger Delta for resource control.
In their separate contributions, Hon Dinebari Loolo (Khana II), Deeya Barine (Khana I), Jones Ogbonda representing Port Harcourt 1, and Christian Ahiakwo representing Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, called on the House to pass the bill in order to immortalise the late rights activist.
