The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Monday said that it could not guarantee the release of 2015 May/June WASSCE results of candidates in states that were indebted to it.
WAEC’s Head of National Office, Dr Charles Eguridu, said at media briefing in Lagos that candidates from no fewer than 19 states that had yet to settle the council’s registration fees may be affected.
Eguridu said that many states in Nigeria paid registration fees of candidates, particularly in their public schools, for the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
He said that this had afforded many indigent students the opportunity to sit for the examinations, as well as relieved many poor parents of the financial burden.
The official said, however, that such obviously good gesture had come at a price to the council.
“As I speak to you now, we are cash-strapped as a result of the delay in off-setting the registration fees owed the council by some states.
“A total of 19 states are indebted to the council to the tune of over N4 billion in respect of entry fees for state government-sponsored candidates for the May/June 2015 WASSCE.
“Some states are also still indebted to WAEC in respect of registration fees for the 2014 May/June diet of the same examination.
“We have written to the affected state governments without response and the poor response of these debtor states is threatening the smooth operations of the council.
“We, therefore, want to publicly plead with the affected states to off-set the registration fees of their candidates for the May/June 2015 WASSCE, as we cannot guarantee releasing their results alongside others in a few weeks’ time ,’’ the HNO said. (NAN)
