President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that the Tertiary Education Fund disbursed N1.3 trillion in the last six years out of the N1.6 trillion set aside by the agency to assist universities and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The president who was represented by the executive secretary of the Nigeria Universities Commission, Prof Julius Okojie, at the 24th convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, said the money disbursed was to improve the quality of learning in the universities.
While urging the universities to ensure judicious use of such funds, he stated that the transformation agenda of his administration did not exclude the existing universities in the country despite the establishment of 12 additional universities.
He urged the universities to leverage on staff development funds as the TERTFUND was aimed at improving the quality of the universities’ infrastructure and personnel development as well as other teaching and learnaing facilities.
