Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba, has commended the authorities of the National Open University of Nigeria for establishing a study centre at Ikom, Cross River State.

Ndoma-Egba, who represents Cross River Central senatorial district, stated this in a statement in Abuja on Monday.

The senator explained that he had also secured the use of the Youth Development Centre in Ikom as a temporary arrangement for the NOUN Study Centre.

Ndoma-Egba noted that he had in a letter dated October 22, 2014 requested the management of NOUN to establish a study centre in Ikom because of the large youth population in the community.

He said, “I was compelled to apply for a NOUN study centre at Ikom, the headquarters of the central senatorial district.

“The reason for this was that our citizens yearn daily for university education but lacked access.

“The peculiar geography of Cross River and the distance from Ikom to Calabar Study Centre at the southern tip of the state also informed my action.”

He promised to “spare no effort in developing it (the study centre) within the shortest possible time.”

Ndoma-Egba said he had, on January 8, applied to the Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Boni Haruna, for the use of the expansive youth centre at Ikom which was lying fallow and in disuse.

To ensure that certain basic facilities were on ground for the take-off of the NOUN Study Centre, he assured members of the public that “a more permanent site would be secured soon.

The statement added that the minister’s approval was conveyed to the Senate Leader on Thursday, February 12 on the premise that a Memorandum of Understanding would be signed on the utilisation of the Centre with the ministry.

The ministry also attached some terms and conditions for the utilisation of the youth centre.
