The resource person to the Global Organisation on Open Education Resources and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), Abel Cain, has said that only about 400,000 candidates from a total of 1.6 million that sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Nigeria were able to secure admission.
This was disclosed yesterday at a workshop for staff and management of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Lagos.

The resource person, who said the statistics were derived from the revelations of the National Bureau of Statistics and the various ministries of education, suggested that for the country to overcome the challenge of limited access, she must support and empower the open and distance learning system.
He said most candidates seeking admission into the nation’s various tertiary institutions during the 2013/2014 academic session were unable to secure space, describing the development as alarming but redeemable.
According to Abel, virtually all the leading universities in the world, including Harvard University, Yale University, among others, have adopted MOOCs as a way of opening up access to all categories of students free of charge.
