The management of Lagos State University, Ojo said it has concluded plans to facilitate refund of the difference between its old school fees and the new one to students.

This fact is contained in the institution’s bulletin affirming that the refunds would be made as soon as funds were released by the state government.

According to the bulletin, the decision is sequel to Governor Babatunde Fashola’s directive earlier in the year that reversed tuition fees of the university from N350,000 for medical students and 197,000 for arts and humanity students to the old rate of N25,000.

In the new policy, the state government also directed refunds to students who had paid the higher fees.

To this end, the university management submitted a request for refund of N843 million to all the affected students.

The management said the request had since been reviewed by the Lagos State ministries of Education and Economic Planning and Budget.

It was stated in the bulletin that the final document would be submitted to the Lagos State Executive Council for approval.

Confirming the development, the vice chancellor of LASU, Prof John Obafunwa, said majority of the students are saying the money should be deducted from the next session’s fees, noting that their suggestion was belated.

He said, “Since we have submitted a request for a refund to the state government and it had been approved, it is not possible again for us to deduct the difference from the next session fees.”

The university assured parents, guardians and the students that the refund would be done as soon as the money was released by the government.
